As the implications of the latest crime statistics continue to hit the headlines, Amthal is focusing on what it means for homeowners, especially coming into winter, and urging extra precautions to be taken.
With the latest figures suggesting a 13% rise in crime across the UK, a surge in violence across London has been blamed for much of the increase.
However, the figures, released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also reveal large-volume offences such as burglary and car crime, which had been falling over the previous two decades, are rising. Domestic burglary is up 21% to 235,335, while thefts are up 11% to 1.9m.
Says Jamie Allam, Commercial Director at Amthal: “The focus of the reporting of the new crime statistics has inevitably been the dramatic increase in violent crime, but dig deeper and what is showing is the rise is genuine and across the board.
“With the timing, coming so close to the clocks going back and crime naturally increasing with the darker nights, we are urging homeowners to take extra action. Even just one additional security measure like setting the alarm at night or adding outdoor lighting can make all the difference.”
Last year there were almost 70,000 burglaries in Greater London with more than 43,000 taking place in people's homes. Robberies have also increased in London dramatically, largely as a result of people having mobile phones stolen.
