Amthal Fire & Security is working closely with Hertfordshire Police to raise awareness of home and business security, following a 34% increase in targeted attacks in the St Albans District.
With most offenders gaining access to properties through gates to back gardens, unlocked UPVC rear or side doors and windows that hadn’t been double locked, simple security measures can make all the difference to whether your home becomes a potential pursuit for the opportunist burglar.
Amthal reinforces Police advice on home security:
- Ensure all windows and doors are locked before leaving the property, including upstairs
- PVCu doors must be secured properly, not only lifting the handles but turning the key to fully engage the door’s security features
- Don’t leave keys by doorways or under plant pots, which can easily fall into the wrong hands.
- When it get’s dark in the evening, make sure timer functions are used on lamps and light to create that ‘lived in look’ for you property particularly when leaving premises vacant
- Make sure you have an alarm fitted to your home. 85% of Police officials surveyed believe alarms deter burglars.
- Join or start a Neighbourhood watch scheme in your area - it has been statistically proven in the past that crime has been lower in the areas where the schemes operate
Says Jamie Allam of Amthal: “Whilst Herts Police continues to increase high visibility patrols, home and business owners can also help to reduce the number of burglaries by taking simple security precautions. Burglars bypass houses that require effort, so we need to work together to make it as difficult as possible for them to commit crime.”
Anyone with information about a burglary or any other crime in the area should call the Herts Police non‐emergency number 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
