With Black Friday now in full swing and less than a month to go until Christmas, shoppers everywhere will be feeling the festive spirit. But sadly, we are not alone, as opportunist burglars are also looking to strike.
Amthal is sharing the message of local Neighbourhood Watch teams to encourage shoppers to be extra vigilant as they wrap up the last of the present buying in time for the big day.
Says Jamie Allam of Amthal Fire & Security: “With the rising popularity of Black Friday in stores and the lead up to Christmas, retailers have invested significantly in putting their finest advertising together and a retail environment to encourage customers to bring the festive feeling to life (and spend in the process!)
“However, opportunist criminals also look forward to the chance to take hide in the increased crowds and escape unnoticed with stolen goods from individuals and retailers. With this in mind, keeping an eye on personal possessions, including handbags, mobiles and valuables should be every shopper’s number one priority.”
Top tips to ensure you stay secure when shopping this Christmas:
- Ladies should keep bags zipped up at all times. Police are even encouraging women to use strap over shoulder bags which burglars will avoid completely.
- Keep wallets in front pockets so that they are more difficult to pick-pocket
- If using cash, separate it out into small sections so if you are targeted, you don’t lose it all in one go
- Mobile phones should be used quickly and swiftly, before being stored away safely.
- Be careful when checking in on social media, as burglars will know your home is empty.
- When dropping off shopping bags to the car, please ensure they are out of sight completely. And make sure you lock the care securely before carrying on shopping!
- If you spot anything or anyone acting suspiciously, please report to a member of staff who will also (hopefully) be trained and on guard through the busy period.
