Reality Check on Retail Crime as it Reaches 10 Year High

Amthal Fire & Security is urging retailers to pay extra attention to security on site, following latest industry figures revealing the highest crime rates the sector has seen in 10 years.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) annual retail crime survey defies a wider trend of falling crime, with a 36% rise in the money lost in shop figures, and a total of three million crimes in the sector, directly adding £603m to retailers' costs in 2013-2014.

Says Paul Rosenthal, Sales Director at Amthal Fire & Security: "The research leaves no doubt that theft, a crime which has always affected retailers, continues to have a significant impact on the sector.

"With the highest figures in a decade recorded, we endorse the words of Deputy Chief Constanble Sue Fish, the National Policing Lead for Retail Crime, who urges stores to have the right security and working practices in place and heed advice to prevent them from being targeted.

"Simple and cost effective measures such as installation of alarms and CCTV can make a significant difference, not only to enhance the retail environment and create a safe place to work and shop, but also to improve efficiencies, access control and provide 24/7/365 peace of mind."

The latest BRC report shows the insider threat is a major source of theft, with the victim's employees accounting for 6% of the overall figure. The cost of retail fraud also rose, growing by 12% and accounting for nearly 40% of the total as shops' virtual shop fronts become increasingly enticing targets for criminals.

As the world becomes more digital and buildings more intelligent, homeowners and businesses are looking at more efficient ways to secure buildings.  Access control enables you total control on who has access to your building. Locks and keys also allow you to secure your building, but when keys are lost or stolen, the inconvenience and expense of changing locks and re-issuing keys can be considerable.

CCTV Installation can let you know who is at your door, help prevent incidents and criminal activity and help protect people and property.  Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) works around the clock to help detect and deter crime, providing organisations with vital information.  Many existing users of CCTV installation are failing to realise the full potential of their system and the benefits it can provide.
