Backing up the ‘Not With My Name’ campaign supported by Amthal Fire & Security, latest crime statistics has shown a 9% increase in fraud offences committed in England and Wales.
The latest crime statistics, published in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), estimated that overall there were 6.8million crimes in 2014/15, down 7% on the last 12 months.
This is the first time the ONS has been able to compare fraud year on year, due to recent changes in the way these crimes are measured.
Yet statisticians suggest that true levels could be higher given that only 20,000 offences referred to Action Fraud, the UK’s national reporting service, involved cheque, plastic card and online bank accounts.
This is much lower than the volumes of such offences estimated by industry. The ONS said the discrepancy reflected the fact that victims of card and bank fraud are more likely to report cases to financial services providers that reimburse their losses than to Action Fraud.
Says Jamie Allam, Commercial Director of Amthal: “The statistics speak for themselves that fraud offences is of grace concern; it is something we are acutely aware as when identity is involved it goes right to the core of ‘protecting what’s precious’. This is especially when it comes to online activity and we encourage everyone to be careful about information they provide and to whom.”
In other findings, the ONS revealed that the 7% fall in the crime survey estimate included a 21% fall in thefts from the person and a 22% drop in thefts of other personal property.
On a more local basis, crime in London increased by 1%, but there were decreases in robberies, theft from a person offences, burglaries, and drug offences.
Jamie concluded: “The drop in burglaries is naturally encouraging, but still this is no time for complacency. We will continue to work with local police forces, homes and businesses to support dedicated campaigns and ensure property is fitted with the very latest security products to ensure assets and possessions are safe and secure. This way, we can reduce further opportunist attacks and keep the long-term downward trend heading in the right direction.”
