A smart home alarm system can be a highly effective deterrent; 60% of burglars say they would be discouraged from targeting a house if they knew it had one fitted, bypassing your home for an easier picking.
And this is especially crucial to consider as we head towards the winter months, when burglaries increase by up to 20% when the clocks change, as thieves take advantage of the earlier sunsets and darker evenings.
Here’s some top tips to keeping your home secure this winter:
1. Be Alarmed
What it comes down to is a home without an alarm is 2 – 3 times more likely to be burgled. Not only is it a visual deterrent to tell the opportunist that you do take home security seriously, but it is also a warning that you are connected to the Police who will act if an alarm is triggered. In fact, the Police believe that alarms deter 85% of burglars.
2. Don’t Forget The Basics
More than 6,000 burglaries in 2014 involved intruders using keys to gain access. This could be because 94% of homeowners leave windows open and 52% make the common mistake of hiding keys by doorways. Also remember that 50% of burglars stated that parcel deliveries left out was a big draw.
3. Hide Your Valuables & Personal Documents
The most commonly stolen goods in burglary may remain what is easy to grab; namely money (34%,) electrical (30%) and computers (34%) but still 78% of us leave valuables in easy view of passers by. With the rise in ID fraud, personal documents should now also be on the list to be safely put away.
4. Think Social
Be careful about posting your updates and whereabouts on social media, especially if you’re purchasing expensive gifts in the lead up to Christmas or planning a holiday. 78% of ex-burglars in a recent interview said the social media platforms and even Google Street View is being used to target properties.
As the nights draw in and weather turns colder, whether you’re preparing for the festive season, going away on holiday, or simply turning the lights out after a long day at work, make sure your home is secure with a smart system that can offer complete peace-of-mind, protecting both your belongings, and – most importantly – you and your family.
