The latest crime rates for England and Wales has doubled to more than 11.6m offences, with the sharp rise in figures due to the inclusion of an estimated 5.1m online fraud incidents and 2.5m cybercrime offences.
This is the first time that families suffering identity theft, “phishing” scams and electronic attacks on their computers and bank accounts have been included in the figures.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the publication of an official estimate of fraud and cybercrime alongside the crime survey of England and Wales following ‘growing concern’ that cybercrime ‘makes up’ for the longer term fall in crime.
The latest crime survey for England and Wales, which is based on people’s experience of crime, has also shown an 8% continued fall of ‘traditional crimes’ such as burglary, with an estimated 6.5m offences in the 12 months to June. Says
Jamie Allam, Commercial Director at Amthal Fire & Security: “The latest crime statistics show very clearly that the nature of crime is changing at a rapid pace, as burglaries become more sophisticated in their methods and take advantage of latest online technologies to attack their targets.
“With this in mind it’s crucial that consumers take necessary steps to protect their personal documents at home and when they are on the move, keep them out of view at all times, and be very careful to whom they provide details. We are already working closely with Neighbourhood Watch teams to ensure we can monitor the situation and keep our customers secure.”
