Amthal Fire & Security has upgraded the fire and security measures at The Marlborough Science Academy to feature high performance IP CCTV, access control and automatic fire detection systems to provide ultimate peace of mind for staff, pupils and visitors.

The Marlborough Science Academy, situated in St Albans, is a specialist science secondary school and sixth form, educating approximately 1,200 students and employing over 80 staff. The school is increasingly being used by the local community out of school hours and so the site required a general upgrade to its security and fire detection systems.

Amthal Fire & Security worked closely with the Estates Management team to provide a comprehensive security overview and offered a number of innovative ideas to ensure complete perimeter security and a smooth operating system throughout the Academy.

The electronic security solution specified, incorporated state of the art IP CCTV together with access control and automatic fire detection systems, all integrated into existing platforms. The structure was installed in just three weeks to ensure minimal disruption to learning timetables.

“The school is committed to offering staff, students and the wider local community a vibrant, happy and nurturing learning environment. So that we can do this as safely as possible, we ensure the fire and security systems, right from the entrance to the school and throughout the site, are all maintained to a high level. Amthal Fire & Security has consistently been highly professional and knowledgeable, going above and beyond the call of duty to provide a complete solution that was even installed at a much faster rate than we had scheduled. We would not hesitate to recommend Amthal Fire & Security to any educational facility looking for guidance and expertise on all aspects of site security.”

Chris Paice, Estates Manager at The Marlborough Science Academy

Jamie Allam, Commercial Direct or of Amthal Fire & Security adds:

“The Government’s continued pledge towards the extended schools agenda means educational premises operate today on a much more ‘open’ nature with either full public access or permitted group access increasingly required. “This plac es add ed pressu res on fi re and secu rity measu res to ensu re even out of traditi onal sc hool hours, the sit e is ca refu lly monit ored. Here, The Marlborough Science Academy has shown how working wit h a trusted brand as Amthal Fire & Security right from security specification throughout the process , can ensure a bespoke security system is created to operate with existing site technologies to keep disruption, cost and install times to a minimum .”

Verulam School was experiencing a number of problems with security and called in Amthal to undertake a thorough review of all the security on the large site.

Verulam School is a high achieving academy for boys in St Albans with an impressive record of academic and sporting achievement. It is also renowned for its commitment to the community along with its many extra-curricular activities. Verulam has recently renewed the annual contract wit h Amthal due to the superb service provided by the company. As a result, we are now working on a new entry system for the school

Director Paul Rosenthal immediately identified a number of serious deficiencies in the system and advised the school how to terminate the existing contract without financial penalty.

Then, within minutes of the termination, the Amthal A Team checked over the system in minute detail, fixed any problems and ensured total security for the staff and pupils whilst on site. Paul then allocated a dedicated experienced engineer to the school to respond immediately to any outstanding faults. As a result of our work, the number of fault calls has been dramatically reduced.

The school is now totally secure, giving peace of mind to staff, management, pupils and parents. This allows the staff to teach in a relaxed atmosphere, unconcerned about external issues such as intruders or alarm failures. Amthal has saved Verulam School time through reducing fault calls and saved valuable budget with a highly cost-effective service.

Five years ago when I took over the school we had a number of security issues. Now, thanks to Amthal we have a system that works well with few problems. In a competitive market, I was very lucky to find a company that truly put my thoughts first, listened to what I wanted and delivered exactly what they said they would.”

Amthal Fire & Security is the security partner of choice for the prestigious St Margaret’s School, to provide peace of mind to all staff, pupils and visitors without compromising on the 19th century architecture of the Grade II listed building.

St Margaret’s was founded in 1749 and owned by the Clergy Orphan Corporation until 1996 when it became a fully independent school for girls, aged 4 – 18. Today, the school is the UK’s longest running girl’s boarding school and one of the oldest independent girls’ schools in the UK and the oldest in Hertfordshire.

Working closely with Amthal Fire & Security, an integrated access control solution alongside bespoke class change systems have all been carefully installed to work around learning timetables and remain sensitive to the historical design of the buildings.

Colin Currie, Facilities Manager at St Margaret’s School says:

“As a school, it is our absolute priority to ensure the security of everyone who works and learns here. In addition for St Margaret’s, the historical significance of the school as a prominent educational establishment is essential to protect and it is our responsibility to make sure it is cared for at every level.

“Amthal Fire & Security certainly did its homework in taking the time to survey the site and came up with a flexible maintenance programme that achieves all these objectives on an ongoing basis. They are always available and offer good advice on anything security or fire safety related, to the extent that we consider them our true security partners. We are continually looking at ways to grow our relationship and enhance our security across the school’s 74 acre site.”

Says David Williamson, Account Manager at Amthal Fire & Security:

“Security and safety in schools is undoubtedly a highly emotive subject and one which is never far from the conscience of those involved in the implementation of an effective school security strategy.  we like to consider ourselves as part of this team,  where we can really understanding the bespoke requirements.  At St Margaret's the benefit of working in this way is allowing for the historical significance of the school and creating a plan to keep it safe and secure for many more years to come.

Education Testimonials

A very prompt & courteous service, everyone we have had dealings with have been very friendly, helpful and professional, thank you.

St Adrian's Primary School

Richard, as things have almost come to a close regarding the above building, I thought I would drop you a line in order to say thanks for what Amthal have carried out there. As you know, it was a bit of a task getting the spec right and there were also variations towards the end that didn't help your engineers. However, all the security items have worked out very well and this is a great weight off my mind and the staff who occupy the building now. Could you also pass on my thanks to Dave (I'm sure this is his name). He was most obliging when we altered a few things at the end and his training presentation to the staff was first class. I'm sure we'll be in contact over the coming months and hopefully, we'll work together again on other projects in the future.
